After a colonoscopy, your diet should generally be light and non-irritating for at least 1-2 days. Dietary recommendations after the procedure also depend on whether the doctor removed a polyp during the procedure or performed any other procedure associated with the risk of delayed bleeding.

Rehydration after the procedure

Immediately after a colonoscopy, it is important to rehydrate the body first. During preparation for the procedure, you deprived your body of a certain amount of fluids and electrolytes. When drinking, give preference to water, weak tea, apple or cranberry juice, and broths. Since you have been losing minerals for several days, your body will also need electrolyte drinks. Avoid carbonated mineral water and sweetened sparkling drinks, as they may cause bloating.

Start with light meals

Your diet after a colonoscopy should consist mainly of low-fat foods with less fiber. Cook some rice, mashed potatoes, or vegetables without skins, or chicken without skin.

After a colonoscopy, it is advisable to introduce fiber into your diet gradually to avoid irritating the digestive tract. During a colonoscopy, the bowel is emptied and may be sensitive, so a sudden increase in fiber could cause bloating, cramps, or diarrhea.

Other foods to watch out for

Fatty foods – avoid fatty and heavy foods such as fried cheese, cutlets, French fries, and hashbrowns. These foods can cause digestive problems..

Spicy foods – immediately after a colonoscopy, your intestines are more sensitive to spices and seasonings. Refrain from consuming them for a while.

Dairy products – some people may be sensitive to dairy products after a colonoscopy. Therefore, it is best to be cautious with milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream.

Alcoholic and carbonated beverages – these are irritating and cause bloating and flatulence.
