How is a colonoscopy performed?

Colonoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic method for detecting changes and abnormalities in the rectum, colon, and terminal part of the small intestine.

It uses a thin, flexible endoscope with a camera. Thanks to its high resolution and the ability to view mucous membranes in special colored light, the doctor gets a perfect overview of the health of your digestive system.

Preparation for a colonoscopy begins with a 5-day low-residue diet, followed by drinking a cleansing solution in the evening and morning before the examination. Upon arrival at our clinic, you will change into special shorts with an opening for the insertion of the device. These will facilitate the process and ensure your privacy.

The procedure begins with a visual and tactile examination of the rectum. The doctor then inserts the device into the rectum through the anal opening and proceeds to other parts of the large intestine. You should expect to change position occasionally. But don't worry, the nurse will help you.

Are you wondering when you will find out the results of your colonoscopy? Good news. Immediately after the examination. If samples are taken for histological evaluation, the results are usually available within one month.

What can be diagnosed using a colonoscope?

This device can be used to diagnose various changes in the mucous membrane in the under-examined section of the digestive tract. For example, inflammatory diseases of the colon and rectum (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis).

Colonoscopy is also the most accurate examination for screening colon and rectal cancer. In recent years, Slovakia has been among the countries with the highest incidence of these types of cancer. Colonoscopy can detect polyps or other precancerous changes in the mucous membrane in time and, in most cases, allows for their immediate endoscopic removal. In addition, colonoscopy can be used to observe diverticula or hemorrhoids, which affect a large part of the population.

How long does a colonoscopy take?

A colonoscopy usually takes between fifteen and thirty minutes. The device is typically inserted into the end of the small intestine. The withdrawal phase is important, as the doctor thoroughly examines the intestinal mucosa. However, much depends on the patient's preparation and cooperation with the doctor. It is important to strictly follow a low-residue diet for 5 days before the colonoscopy. On the day of the procedure, arrive on an empty stomach and do not drink anything for about 4 hours before the examination. By following the doctor's instructions, you will ensure that the procedure goes smoothly. A quick and painless colonoscopy is the result of cooperation between both parties.

How can pain and discomfort during colonoscopy examinations be prevented?

Perhaps you are one of the lucky ones who feel nothing but minor discomfort during a colonoscopy. However, the examination is sometimes complicated by unusual bowel movements, atypical bowel placement, or post-operative conditions. In such cases, it is necessary to resort to measures that will achieve the desired goal. This is a completely painless colonoscopy. An effective solution is insufflation (inflation of the intestine) with carbon dioxide. It also involves the intravenous administration of drugs for short-term sedation and strong painkillers. These eliminate any discomfort during and, in particular, after the examination. Don't worry, the friendly experts at a private colonoscopy clinic will take good care of you.
